The Game Winner
It was zero to zero in double overtime. The JV La Salle Lancer Football team was on their way to share the GCL championship with rival Moeller. There was only one team left in their path and that was Elder, the game was defensively dominated, and I was the kicker for the Lancers. I could have won the game at the end of regulation, but I missed the field goal and felt terrible. Now I was waiting for my chance at redemption.
As double over time started I began to feel sick to my stomach as I watched the Elder Panthers score a touchdown. We somehow blocked the extra point and on the next play we scored a touchdown. The game was tied and it was up to me to make the kick for the win. The pressure was immense as I watched the ball bounce off the cross bar we had won 7-6. Everyone was excited and I got carried on the linebackers’ shoulders just like in the movie Rudy. At least this is how I remember the game. That memory is something I will keep for a lifetime.
This story of my game winning kick has changed, it is told with humor now as I try to forget about my miss in regulation. Over time it will probably get more exaggerated and with this exaggeration, the memory has given me a sense of accomplishment. My game winner has made me more confident in my abilities to set a goal and achieve it. I wanted redemption and I got my chance and made it count.
