Memories are the basis for one’s identity. The memories you have, or the memories people have about you define who you are and how those people perceive you. One on the memories that I have is no different than the general populations, and it defines me as an individual. This memory does not have to be one from early childhood, but rather it can be from any point in your life that you define as a life altering moment. The moment I consider the epitome of the change between adolescence and adulthood is my memory of joining Sigma Phi Epsilon.
I remember the event as if it happened yesterday, but in reality, next Thursday marks exactly one year since the day that changed my life for the better by accepting my bid from SigEp. That night was a steak dinner for recruits with a bunch of alumni; which made it even cooler because when I accepted my bid the first people to come up to me were a bunch of men who had built the place I now call home. It is hard to explain to people the magnitude of this decision, but this is why my decision defined my identity as much as a related event in my past. Joining the fraternity has led to me become more confident in speaking with other as well as going out and getting involved on campus. Also, and more importantly, it has allowed me to grow as a person including: respect, honesty, and simply my work ethic and study habits.
These traits will stick with me for the rest of my life and allow me to further grow as an individual and a teammate. I would not go back anything about that night because Sigma Phi Epsilon has become my college family and has always reminded me of my identity as a person in this prestigious brotherhood.
